Today I learned about the entire water system of Dayton, Ohio. And I will say this: It's probably the best in the country. We use water from an underground aquifer instead of surface water, which leads to the water being clean and plentiful (1.5 trillion gallons to be exact). And the water in that aquifer is always being replenished by conservation systems, but also by rain seeping into the ground. Today, we had five stations that we went to. The first: How the water lines and pipes are monitored. They have cameras that go down into the pipelines and rome around. The second: How the Water Treatment Plant works. They separate the water that goes down our drains and the storm drain to make sure that we have clean drinking water and healthy river water. The third: Storm Drain Murals. I created a mural to put on a storm drain to give the message to people not to put trash or other pollutants down there. Mine said, "Nemo had a hard enough time finding his home. He shouldn't lose it too." The fourth: Testing water. Water is tested for things like bacteria but also pH and dissolved oxygen. I took some water from the creek and we tested the pH balance and the amount of dissolved oxygen. It was normal. And the fifth: A presentation about the ENTIRE thing. It was basically a runthrough of everything I had just learned. I knew the water system in Dayton was good but now I have a lot more personal knowledge of where the water comes from, how it's cleaned, and how it's conserved. Its pretty cool.
So...about the poem above, my group and I had to create a poem that was about a river. We had to make it about the way water flows in a river (in order), in the structure of the story, "The Pie that Papa Baked." It had to be in the form: (subject)-(adjective) and (adjective), (new line that connects to the first line). We took a bunch of random subjects and just put them together. I think we did a pretty good job.
